Bolesławiec Ceramics and Porcelain: Fire at 1250°C, cobalt stamp, and stoneware from the Bóbr river basin

The first potter from Bolesławiec appears in historical records in 1380, in the municipal books of Świdnica. Six and a half centuries later, the same town on the Bóbr River does the same: it extracts stoneware clay from the earth, shapes it, stamps it with a sponge dipped in cobalt, and fires it in a kiln at well over a thousand degrees. In the interim, everything has changed here except the clay and the kiln: the language, the border, the owner, the town's name, and the people standing at the decorating tables. Simply put: this is the longest-operating ceramic workshop in Poland. Here's how it works – and precisely what it has endured.

I. 1380–1762. FIVE WORKSHOPS ON THE BÓBR RIVER

Bolesławiec – until 1945 Bunzlau – is located in the Bóbr and Kwisa river basins, on deposits that German studies call the Bolesławiec-Nowogrodziec clay basin (Bunzlauer-Naumburger Tonbecken). This is a rare arrangement: two raw materials emerge from one deposit simultaneously – stoneware body for the ware and pure, low-melting red-brown clay for the glaze. Nothing needed to be transported. The Polish Geological Institute currently estimates Poland's balance reserves of stoneware clays at 83.27 million tons, with an estimated extraction of 235.74 thousand tons in 2025, and white-firing clays at 61.09 million tons, with an estimated extraction of 137.33 thousand tons; the quality criterion for stoneware clay is a maximum of 5 percent water absorption after firing. The raw material for Bolesławiec factories comes from nearby open-pit mines – including the "Ekoceramika" mine, while the quarry in Zebrzydowa has already been reclaimed.

The oldest record of a potter here dates back to 1380, from the municipal records of Świdnica. In the 15th century, chronicles note five potteries – four in the Lower Suburb, one in the Upper. The earliest historical information about the Bolesławiec potters' guild dates from 1511, although the guild likely operated earlier. The number of five workshops was neither an accident nor a result of a lack of interest: it was a limit that masters guarded as a privilege throughout the 18th century. It was only abolished in 1762, under Prussian administration – Silesia passed to Prussia in 1742. The effect is visible in the numbers: in 1806, ten masters worked in the city, in 1829 – thirteen guild members and two non-members.

In 1751, master Johann Gottlieb Joppe arrived in Bunzlau, and two years later, he sculpted an item that remains the emblem of this craft to this day. The Great Pot of 1753 was 2.15 meters high, about 4 meters in circumference, had a capacity of nearly 1970 liters, and weighed about 600 kilograms. It was not a utilitarian vessel but a demonstration of the workshop's strength and the material's capabilities. In 1893, it was moved to a tower by the pond, and in 1909 – to the Municipal Museum. Then the trail goes cold: the Museum of Ceramics explicitly states that the pot's further fate remains in the realm of hypotheses. The object disappeared, but the symbol remained – and it is this symbol that stands in the city today in replicas.

II. EARTHEN GLAZE. WHY BUNZLAU WAS BROWN

Old Bunzlau stoneware was not white and blue. Its trademark was earthen glaze (Lehmglasur) – brown, slightly glossy, obtained from the same local, low-melting clay that lay next to the body deposit. The vessel was dipped in diluted clay and fired; the coating sealed the walls against liquids. German studies emphasize that this is the oldest technique here and that – at least for storage vessels – it was used continuously until 1945.

It is important to distinguish this from neighboring traditions, as the names can be misleading. Westerwald and Mużaków stoneware used salt glaze: salt was thrown into a hot kiln, and the sodium reacted with the silica of the body, creating a characteristic, rough "orange peel" surface. Bolesławiec did not choose this path. Here, the glaze was applied, not vaporized in the kiln – and that is why an 18th-century Bolesławiec vessel is smooth and warmly brown, not gray and porous to the touch. Decoration was done using applied elements – attached pieces covered with the same colored glaze – as well as by marbling and inlay; white plant motifs appeared in the mid-18th century. In 1793, Carl Daniel Bach sent drawings of vessels here, and in 1802, Ernst Samuel Gotthard executed them according to these designs. The brown line never truly died out, by the way: in 1936, it was revived as the "Bunzlauer Braunzeug" campaign, focusing on sturdy kitchen and sanitary ware.

III. ALTMANN. WHITE BACKGROUND AND THE END OF LEAD

The breakthrough came from Johann Gottlieb Altmann's workshop. The Museum of Ceramics dates his new glaze to 1825 and describes it as "a new, healthier type of glaze with low lead content." Other studies – including English-language compendia and materials from the Ceramic Factories themselves – cite 1828 and speak directly of lead-free, feldspathic glaze, which replaced the dangerous lead coating. Sources differ on the exact date and how completely lead disappeared then. They do not differ on the direction: from lead to feldspar, from brown to white.

White was not an aesthetic whim, but a technical requirement. On a brown earthen glaze, cobalt is invisible. Only a light background allows anything to be seen on the vessel – and only then does any stamped, rather than incised, pattern make sense. Altmann went further: he was a pioneer of white clay and shifted part of the production from wheel-throwing to casting in plaster molds. This yielded repeatable edges, handles, and profiles, and incidentally, surfaces regular enough to be stamped. All the subsequent fame of the Bolesławiec stamp rests on two decisions made in this workshop in the 1820s: white background and casting.

IV. FIRE. TWO FIRINGS, AROUND 1000°C AND AROUND 1250°C

The technology is two-stage and has remained so. First, bisque firing – the Ceramic Factories state approximately 800°C for their line, while other descriptions of the process mention around 1000°C. The body hardens, water evaporates completely, the product shrinks slightly and takes on a pale pink hue, but remains absorbent – and this is precisely why it takes paint and glaze. Then comes the decoration, glazing by dipping or spraying, and the main firing. The Ceramika Artystyczna Cooperative gives a range of 1100–1300°C, yielding a "dense, durable, and partially vitrified structure"; the Ceramic Factories speak of over 1200°C for a total of about fifteen hours; German studies indicate up to 1260°C for the local clay. Producers most often summarize this with a single number: around 1250°C.

  • Body: stoneware clay from the Bolesławiec–Nowogrodziec basin, blunged and de-aired; criterion for raw material is max. 5% water absorption after firing.
  • Forming: casting in a plaster mold or throwing on a wheel. One plaster mold yields about 150 castings, with good care even 200 – then the plaster loses its sharpness and is scrapped.
  • Drying and bisque firing: water evaporates, body shrinks and turns pink; approx. 800–1000°C.
  • Decoration: underglaze paints, predominantly cobalt. Cobalt is purple before firing – the decorator does not see the final color, but knows it.
  • Glazing: dipping or spraying; the glaze almost completely covers the pattern.
  • Main firing: several hours, around 1250°C. The glaze becomes transparent like glass, the pattern reappears, and cobalt is now blue.

At this temperature, the body sinters: the pores close, and the glaze merges with the body into a single surface. Hence its low absorbency and resistance to boiling water, frost, and dishwashers. What stoneware cannot withstand: direct flame. Oven and microwave, yes; gas burner, no – it is not flameware.

Here, something that the market blurs needs to be stated. "Bolesławiec porcelain" is a common shorthand, not a description of the material. Porcelain is made from kaolin, quartz, and feldspar, fired at temperatures of 1300–1400°C, is white throughout, and is translucent. Faience has a porous body and is only impermeable due to its glaze – if the coating chips, it becomes absorbent. Stoneware lies in between: clay, grog, and quartz sand, a sintered and opaque body, thick, heavy, and impermeable by itself. Bolesławiec makes stoneware and never made porcelain. This difference is not nomenclatural snobbery – it is precisely why a Bolesławiec mug weighs what it weighs, retains heat longer, and comes out of the dishwasher without a scratch.

V. AROUND 1882. SPONGE, COBALT AND PEACOCK EYE

The stamping technique appeared in Bolesławiec around 1882 – immediately in cobalt and green. The principle is primitively simple and therefore reliable: a small stamp with a motif is hand-cut from a natural sea sponge, dipped in underglaze paint, and pressed onto the bisque. The sponge was chosen not for its beauty, but because it holds the paint wet for a long time – the decorator can go around the entire vessel without returning to the bowl every now and then. The sponge has an irregular pore structure, so each impression comes out slightly differently. This is not a defect – it is the only proof that a hand, not a decal, stood by the vessel. Some of today's factories also use rubber stamps, which give a more even impression.

The most famous pattern, the peacock eye (German: Pfauenauge) – concentric circles in various colors, imitating the eye of a peacock feather – came into use at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, along with the Art Nouveau fashion, and remains the most commonly used motif in the town to this day. The flourishing of stamped designs occurred in the 1920s and 1930s. The foundation for this flourishing was laid by the school: in 1897, the Royal Professional Ceramic School was established, formalized as the Keramische Fachschule in 1898, under the direction of Dr. Wilhelm Pukall (1860–1936), sent from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin. The school introduced clay blunging, casting in plaster molds, and new kilns, primarily accepted sons of local potters, and attracted designers from outside the industry – Karl Groß, Henry van de Velde, August Gaul, Artur Hennig. The workshop was combined with design, and products were pushed to world exhibitions.

  • 1870s: approximately twenty pottery workshops in Bunzlau itself and about thirty-five in nearby Naumburg (today Nowogrodziec).
  • Most important manufacturers: Randhahn, Seiffert, Hugo Reinhold & Co., Burdack, Julius Paul und Sohn (19 Polna Street, 1893–1945), Karl Werner & Co., Gleisberg, August Hude.
  • Medals: honorary award at the Crafts Exhibition in Berlin (1844), gold medal at the First Great World Exhibition in London (1851), awards in St. Louis (1904) and Brussels (1910).
  • Market organization: between 1921 and 1929, the association Vereinigte Topfwarenfabrikanten Bunzlau operated; in 1936, the "Bunzlauer Braunzeug" campaign was launched, restoring brown earthen glaze.

VI. 1945–1946. NEW PEOPLE AT OLD KILNS

In the years 1945–1946, a break occurred, but not where it is usually sought. The German population was displaced in accordance with the Potsdam agreements; some specialists were retained to transfer technology to Polish newcomers. The new administration consciously cut off designs considered German. But the factories, molds, and kilns mostly survived – as Professor Konrad Spindler noted, kilns that were already operating at the end of the 19th century are still being fired in Bolesławiec today. The continuity of people was broken, not the continuity of the workshop. Researchers Anna Kurpiel and Katarzyna Maniak described this arrangement in "Kultura i Społeczeństwo" (2020) as "the heritage of many heirs."

Who stood at these kilns? Largely re-emigrants from Yugoslavia – Poles from Bosnia. According to Mieczysław Oliwa's findings, between March 28 and November 5, 1946, thirty-two transports arrived; the first departed on March 28, 1946, from Bosanski Brod station in forty-one wagons and reached Bolesławiec on April 5. The State Repatriation Office counted about twenty thousand people by the end of 1948. These people did not know how to make stoneware. They learned it on site, at other people's kilns, from other people's molds. The Ceramics Museum recorded this history in the "To Save from Oblivion" project (2013–2016): 310 students and 50 teachers collected material for 252 biographies of settlers published in four volumes.

The restart proceeded faster than the ruins suggested. The first factory started operating in 1946 thanks to the involvement of the artist-ceramicist, Professor of the Kraków School of Decorative Arts, Tadeusz Szafran – in the pottery workshop at ul. Górne Młyny 10, the former Richard Reinhold factory. The Reinhold & Co. company resumed production already in August 1946. In 1950, a cooperative, later CPLiA "Ceramika Artystyczna," was established in the former Julius Paul und Sohn factory at ul. Polna 19. Artistic direction passed through the hands of Izabela Zdrzałka (1954), Alicja Szurmińska-Krępowa (1958), and Amanda Różańska (1960), until Bronisław Wolanin, a graduate of Julia Kotarbińska's studio, took over in 1964 and rebuilt the classic repertoire. Alongside him worked the technologist Andrzej Skowroński, recreating the stamps and the technique itself. The stamping method returned as mass production in 1974 – designer Anna Pasierbiewicz then took charge of the stamped patterns. The state-owned side of the industry also organized itself: in 1964, the Bolesławiec Ceramic Works of the Local Industry were established, and in 1980, the Ceramic Works "BOLESŁAWIEC" were separated from them. The memory institution was launched even earlier – the museum was established in 1950 in place of the pre-war Municipal Museum from 1911, and it was given the name Museum of Ceramics in 1968, inspired by Dr. Maria Starzewska.

VII. WHAT REMAINS TODAY. FORTY COMPANIES AND CHINESE "BOLESŁAWIEC"

Today, there are about forty ceramic companies operating in Bolesławiec and its surroundings, employing about one and a half thousand people. The scale is quantifiable: in 2025, the "Ceramika Artystyczna" Cooperative generated PLN 61 million in revenue with PLN 1.2 million in profit, Manufaktura – PLN 40 million in revenue and PLN 3 million in profit, Ceramic Works "BOLESŁAWIEC" – PLN 51 million in revenue and PLN 0.4 million in loss. The Works themselves have over 1800 decoration patterns and release 100 to 150 new design proposals annually. A distributor waits at least ten months for delivery. The bottleneck is not the clay or the kiln, but the hand: in the largest private manufactory, the average age of the crew is 58 years, and a decorator adorns an average of 60 vessels per shift with a stamp – at least 100 with a spray gun.

Defense proceeds on two fronts. The EU system of geographical indications for craft and industrial products has been in effect since December 1, 2025, but the Polish implementing act is still ongoing – the Patent Office met with Ceramic Works "BOLESŁAWIEC" on August 5, 2026, and a coordination conference was convened for September 2, 2026. "We are waiting for the trademark from the Patent Office," says Jarosław Rutyna, Elder of the Ceramic Brotherhood. The second front is heritage: on July 28, 2023, about thirty workshops and manufactories signed an application to include Bolesławiec ceramics on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, with the UNESCO Representative List as the ultimate goal. Until then, the only effective protection remains the buyer's eye.

  • Bottom of the vessel: embossed inscription "Hand made in Poland", manufacturer's mark and pattern number. Author's pieces bear the UNIKAT (UNIQUE) designation and the decorator's signature.
  • Repeatability: stamp impressions are never identical. A perfectly even grid of the same elements, without differences in saturation, indicates a print or decal.
  • Pattern edge: with a hand stamp, areas where the sponge transferred less paint are visible – the pattern has a torn, porous boundary, not a crisp line.
  • Touch: cobalt sits under the glaze. The edge of the decoration should not be felt with a fingernail; a palpable relief of the pattern indicates overglaze paint.
  • Weight: fired stoneware is heavy and dull-sounding. A thin, light, resonant body is earthenware or porcelain – not Bolesławiec.
  • Historical signatures: collector's catalogs note, among others, Bronisław Wolanin's "BW" mark used after 1964, and the symbol of three towers on richly decorated products from 2001.

What is Nowrocky looking for in Bolesławiec? Not a pattern. A criterion. A vessel from here is heavy because it has to be heavy: fired stoneware has a different density than thin earthenware, so a mug stays where you put it and retains heat longer. It has an uneven stamp impression because it was made by a hand that averages 58 years old this year. It has lead-free glaze because that's how this workshop was set up almost two hundred years ago and no one has reversed it. This is the specification against which we benchmark our own products – and a reference point when judging what is craft and what only looks like craft.

The bottom of an authentic piece features the impressed inscription "Hand made in Poland," the manufacturer's mark, and the pattern number, while unique author's pieces are marked UNIKAT with the decorator's signature. Hand-stamped impressions are never identical: a perfectly even grid of the same elements, without differences in paint saturation, indicates a print or decal. The edge of a sponge-stamped pattern is jagged and porous, and the cobalt sits under the glaze – you should not feel the relief of the decoration with your fingernail. Vitrified stoneware is also noticeably heavy; a thin, light, and resonant body indicates earthenware or porcelain.
