OPATÓWEK NEAR KALISZ // 1824–1981

In Opatówek, near Kalisz, stands a building that has survived everything that was meant to close it. It was erected between 1824 and 1826 as the largest and most modern cloth factory in the Kingdom of Poland – five storeys of wooden construction on oak piles driven into marshy ground, designed by Wojciech Lange, with a classical facade featuring risalits and triglyphs. In 1826, 477 people worked here. A decade later, over six hundred. Then came the tsarist customs tariff, two uprisings, bankruptcy, war, and German warehouses. The company disappeared. The structure remained and stands to this day – the only such factory complex from the first half of the 19th century preserved in Europe.

I. THE VICEROY'S ESTATE. HOW SAXONS CAME TO KALISZ

Opatówek was the property of General Józef Zajączek, Viceroy of the Kingdom of Poland, who received this estate for his Napoleonic service. The local decision-making circle centered around the viceroy and his wife Aleksandra: the estate was managed by Józef Radoszewski, president of the Kalisz Voivodeship Commission, and the town's mayor was Jan Kanty Giller, a former Napoleonic soldier. It was this circle of people who in 1824 led to the contract that transformed Opatówek for a hundred years.

The other party to the agreement came from Saxony. Adolf Gottlieb Fiedler was born in 1771 in Dresden as the son of Christian Gottlob Fiedler and was one of the most important cloth manufacturers in his country. His company's headquarters were in Oederan – where he also served as mayor – and his factories were in Wegefarth, Wingendorf, Falkenau, and Berthelsdorf. To these were added two Polish ones: in Kalisz and Opatówek. He died on August 12, 1850, in Dresden.

The calculation was simple on both sides. The government of the Kingdom wanted to break away from importing textiles and was building its own industry with credit. The Saxons were moving east, where wages were lower, government loans were available, and water power was free. Experienced Saxon and Bohemian master craftsmen, who were to start and operate these machines, followed the capital. This is how the Kalisz-Masovian industrial district was formed, and the Opatówek factory became its largest single plant.

One thing still divides sources: kinship. The Museum of Industrial History speaks of brothers – Adolf Gottlieb and Edward. The monograph of Opatówek and German biographies claim otherwise: Eduard Magnus was Adolf's son and took over the factory after his father's death. The contradiction cannot be swept under the rug, so we record it as it appears in the documents.

II. PILES IN WET GROUND. ANATOMY OF THE BUILDING

The design was by Wojciech Lange. The main block with the east and north wings was built between 1824 and 1826; the west wing was completed in 1831, the worst possible moment – but more on that later. The ground for construction was marshy, so the foundations were laid on oak piles. Oak under water does not rot but hardens; whoever calculated it knew what they were doing, because the structure stands two hundred years later.

Inside, there is not an ounce of reinforced concrete. The entire five-story structure of the halls is supported by wooden ceiling beams resting on columns of pine, larch, and oak – three types selected for different roles and loads. The ceilings were dimensioned not for the weight of the machines themselves, but for their vibrations, which is a completely different calculation task. Additionally, there's an original cast-iron staircase, running through the entire building.

The facade was meant to convey that this was not a barn, but a showcase of the state: plaster with partial rustication, risalits, profiled cornices, corbels, and triglyphs. On the eastern facade, the architect added a pseudo-risalit with a pediment – pure decoration. But the most important element of the facade is functional: a regular, dense rhythm of rectangular windows. In the days before gas and electric lighting, the window was the only source of light above the loom, and uniform illumination of the hall determined whether the weaver could see a flaw in the weave. Around 1870, a boiler house chimney was added – thirty-eight meters tall.

  • Foundations: Oak piles driven into marshy ground, on which foundations for three connected wings – east, north, and west – with a basement.
  • Hall construction: Five stories of wooden framework; ceiling beams on pine, larch, and oak columns, calculated for vibrations of working machines.
  • Vertical communication: Original cast-iron staircase serving all levels.

III. TWO MACHINES FROM SERAING

Here one needs to be precise, as popular descriptions mix facts. Jarosław Dolat from the Museum of Industrial History established in a study on steam engines that in 1824, two steam engines from the John Cockerill company in Seraing near Liège were installed in Opatówek. The first, according to contemporary terminology, was called colossal: it had a power of 24 horsepower and drove carding machines, shearing machines, and machines for dyeing cloth. The second was called pyramidal and operated a single device – a Dutch fulling mill with five beaters.

Incidentally, this resolves the dispute about the nationality of these machines, as some sources describe them as Belgian, and others as Dutch. Both sides are correct: in 1824, Seraing was located in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Belgium only declared independence in 1830. Cockerill's factories in Seraing were then one of the most modern machine factories in Europe – and they sold to Opatówek.

The scale of this investment only makes sense in comparison. The first steam engine in Polish lands operated in the "Fryderyk" lead ore mine near Tarnowskie Góry. In the textile industry, the first was launched in 1820 in Jankowski's wool spinning mill in Bielsko, and in the Kingdom of Poland itself – in 1821 in the Fine Cloth Manufactory in Warsaw. Fiedler thus entered the game three years after the capital's pioneer and immediately with two machines.

The rest of the machinery park confirms this assessment. The factory inventories listed 27 carding machines, 7 wool beating machines, 41 shearing machines, and 20 hand shears, 8 dyeing vats, a fulling mill with presses, 58 weaving looms, and 10 spinning sets. The weaving mill started in 1826 with forty hand looms and five mechanical ones – a mechanical loom was a rarity in the Kingdom at that time.

IV. FROM FLEECE TO PIECE. THE FULL PATH OF CLOTH

The value of Opatówek for the history of technology comes from the fact that in one complex, all phases of production – from raw material to finished product – can be traced. Nothing went out to a subcontractor. Below is the full cycle through which wool passed in these halls before becoming uniform cloth.

  • Fleece sorting: Manual separation of wool into grades by fiber thickness and length. This decision determined the type of final cloth – fine or medium. Raw material was bought by the stone; a stone weighed 33 pounds.
  • Washing: Rinsing out suint and impurities. Wool from sheep contains grease, sand, and plant remnants; if not removed, they block dye and spoil spinning.
  • Beating: Seven beating machines broke up compacted locks and removed the remaining dust. A dirty, noisy, and absolutely necessary stage.
  • Carding: 27 carding machines disentangled the fibers and arranged them into an even, thin ribbon of fleece. These were attached to the drive shaft of Cockerill's "colossal" machine.
  • Spinning: Ten spinning sets twisted this ribbon into warp and weft threads. The twist determined strength and how the fabric would behave in the fulling mill.
  • Weaving: Hand looms, eventually mechanical. The commercial measure was a piece – a length of cloth measuring 32 ells. A weaver left the loom with a piece, not a meter.
  • Fulling: The heart of the entire process. Damp cloth was crushed in beaters in hot water, sometimes with added alkalis, to remove fats and weaving size, felt the fibers, and densify the fabric. The cloth then shrinks in width and length, and any material defect becomes visible. In the 18th century, the entire operation took about eight days, of which the beating alone took 14–25 hours, and for dyed fabrics even 25–30 hours.
  • Teasing: Drawing out the nap onto the surface with dried fuller's thistles mounted on rollers. The thistle has one advantage over metal, for which it was used until the 20th century: upon encountering resistance in the fabric, it breaks, whereas a metal tooth would tear the cloth.
  • Shearing: Trimming the raised nap to a uniform height. In Opatówek, this was done by 41 shearing machines plus 20 pairs of hand shears for touch-ups. From this operation, the cloth gains a smooth, compact surface, from which water drains.
  • Dyeing: Eight dyeing vats. The primary dye was indigo, alongside plant dyes; dyeing was done in wool or in finished fabric, and the order determined the depth of color.
  • Pressing and decatizing: Finishing. Decatizing is the alternating action of hot water, cold water, and steam, which stabilizes the dimensions of the fabric. Without it, a finished coat would shrink with the first rain.

Following this path, a dense cloth emerged, felted so tightly that the weave was no longer visible to the naked eye. The material withstands wind without any membrane, because the barrier is formed by the very structure of the fibers compacted in the fulling mill. This is a technology that cannot be rushed – and that is why good cloth was always expensive.

V. GOLD MEDAL, THEN CUSTOMS WALL

Verification came quickly. In 1828, cloth from Opatówek won the Grand Gold Medal at the first National Industry Exhibition, and the factory was awarded at subsequent exhibitions for the next three decades. "Fiedler's cloth" became a recognizable brand at home and abroad, valued primarily as a uniform material. It went east: to Russia, further through Russian trade routes to Mongolia and China.

And this very direction was killed by a single administrative decision. In November 1831, after the fall of the November Uprising, the tsarist authorities introduced a new customs tariff. Russian goods retained the mild rates from 1822, while Polish products imported into the Empire were subject to customs duties of 3 to 16 percent, and in the case of heavy cloth – even up to 30 percent of the value. The customs duty hit exactly what Opatówek stood for: wool and the Russian market. The export of Polish cloth to China was interrupted.

The western wing of the factory was thus completed in the year the market ceased to exist. Some of the competition reacted by fleeing across the border, and thus the Białystok textile district was established – Białystok, Choroszcz, Supraśl. The rest stayed and tried to make up for the loss with quality and technology. The customs border between the Kingdom and the Empire was abolished only in 1851, twenty years later.

Opatówek endured. In the late 1830s, employment reached over six hundred workers operating nearly a hundred looms, and some records even speak of a thousand people after twelve years of operation. True prosperity, however, came later – from the 1860s until World War I. The price was entanglement in politics: for the participation of its inhabitants in the January Uprising, Opatówek lost its city rights in 1870.

VI. REPORT FROM 1888

The best cross-section of the mature plant is given by the report from 1888. The factory then employed 550 workers, 5 foremen, and 8 assistant foremen. Power was supplied by three steam engines of 50 horsepower each and two water wheels of 8 horsepower each – steam already dominated, but water was not disconnected, as free energy is not discarded. The hall housed 100 hand looms and 40 mechanical looms, and the spinning mill operated on ten sets of machines totaling 1440 spindles.

The annual production, according to the Opatówek monograph, was 35 thousand arshins of fine cloth worth 400 thousand rubles; other compilations value it at 440 thousand rubles. An arshin is a Russian measure – in the Russian partition officially 0.711167 meters. Thirty-five thousand arshins thus means nearly twenty-five kilometers of finished cloth per year, coming from one building near Kalisz.

There is also a number in this report that cannot be read indifferently: the weekly wage of a worker was about two and a half rubles. With an annual production worth four hundred thousand rubles, these two and a half rubles represent the entire economy of 19th-century industry in a single item.

The plant was already managed by the Nitzsches. After the Fiedlers, the factory was taken over by Ferdynand Nitzsche – a figure so intertwined with local relations that Stanisław Wojciechowski, later President of the Republic of Poland, was his godson. The last family member to run the plant was Ferdynand's son, Paweł. Under his management, around 1910, the cloth factory ceased operations.

VII. COMPANY, COLD STORE, WAREHOUSE, MUSEUM

After World War I, the plant was bought by the American concern Union Liberty – and also went bankrupt. In 1924, a joint-stock company "Fabryka Sukna w Opatówku dawniej Fiedlera" (Opatówek Cloth Factory, formerly Fiedler) operated here, with a capital of 600 million Polish marks divided into 1.2 million shares of 500 marks each; papers of the third issue from that year still circulate among collectors of historical securities. The complex was then taken over by Stefan Ostrowski and Zdzisław Grocholski. For a while, they still produced cloth, then converted the factory into a slaughterhouse and poultry cold storage. Textile production finally ceased in 1937.

During World War II, the Germans set up warehouses and equipment sorting facilities in the halls. After the war, the building stood and deteriorated. Rescue came in the late 1970s, initiated by Roman Hauke, later the director of the institution. On January 1, 1981, the Museum of Industrial History was established, and after years of renovation of the eastern and northern wings, the facility was opened to visitors in 1991. In 1998, the museum was entered into the National Register of Museums under number 45.

Today, the exhibition occupies 1862.71 square meters and houses nine permanent exhibitions. The collections are estimated at several thousand exhibits – steam engines, looms, printing machines, spinning, sewing, embroidery, and lace-making machines, ceramic molds, laboratory instruments, office machines. Separately, there are textile collections: jacquard designs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, lace, embroidery, and antique paraments, including the chasuble and stole of John Paul II from 1997. The most numerous collection, however, is musical – the largest collection in the country of Polish pianos and upright pianos from 1820–1939, from factories in Kalisz, Warsaw, Radom, Łódź, Krakow, and Königsberg. Individual studies report different numbers for this collection, from several dozen to over eighty instruments.

It is worth knowing the true history of the most famous exhibit. The J. E. Christoph A. G. steam engine from Niesky in Upper Lusatia dates from 1886, but it did not work in this factory: it powered a distillery in Stropieszyn in Kalisz county, it came to the museum in 2004 as a deposit, and in 2010 its steam drive was converted to electric so it could safely operate for visitors. It is a single-cylinder engine with a cylinder diameter of 240 mm and a stroke of 480 mm, with pulleys of 1660 and 950 mm. The historical power source of the Fiedler factory was different – two Cockerill machines from Seraing, imported in 1824.

The last chapter was added recently. In 2025, the museum received the Grand Prix Izabella 2024 in the category of cultural heritage preservation – for the reconstruction and restoration to use of the historic western wing, the same one that Lange's team finished in 1831. Nearly two hundred years after the first oak pile was driven into the Opatówek mud, the building is once again taking on new functions. The companies that built it have been gone for a hundred years.
