Poland's largest shirt factory was named after a street, and the street was named after a village. The "Wólczanka" Garment Industry Plants were established in Łódź on October 10, 1948, by an order of the Minister of Industry and Trade, taking over the premises of Garment Center No. 3, where production had already begun on January 25, 1945 – immediately after the front passed through Łódź. At its peak, the plant produced up to 9.7 million shirts annually and employed approximately five thousand people.

This is not a text about nostalgia for a brand label, but about how a shirt is constructed – from the yoke and the double-folded seam, through the number of stitches per inch, to the collar, which is the only element of this construction observed from a meter away and forgives nothing. We go element by element: what is made of what, where quality is truly measured, and why for a hundred years men have been detaching their collars from their shirts.

I. WÓLCZAŃSKA 243: THE ADDRESS THAT GAVE THE NAME

The name did not come from marketing. The United "Wólczanka" Garment Industry Plants had an address at Wólczańska 243A in Łódź, and Wólczańska itself was named after the government village of Wólka on the Jasień river. The street was regulated between 1824–1828, during the creation of the industrial settlement of Łódka, intended for the settlement of linen and cotton weavers. In 1915 and again from 1940–1945, it was Germanized to Spinnlinie, literally "spinning line"; in 1945, Wólczańska was restored. The shirt factory therefore stood on a street laid out for weavers, whose German name explicitly stated its purpose.

From 1945, it mainly produced goods for the military, including men's shirts. Expansion spread throughout the region: in 1965, as part of the revitalization of the Łódź Voivodeship, "Wólczanka" built factories in Łask, Poddębice, and Wieruszów, and in 1971, plants in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski and Opatów were annexed. The brand store was located at Piotrkowska 8. The scale was factory-sized, not workshop-sized: up to 9.7 million shirts annually, half for export – to the USSR, the United States, Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Scandinavian countries – employing about 5,000 people. The company belonged to the All-Polish Association of Producers of Clothing and Underwear, which itself indicates the category of shirts at that time.

This industry had a specific face in Łódź: in the post-war garment industry of the city, employment increased tenfold, and over 80 percent of the workforce consisted of women. The end stretched over fifteen years. In 1991, the enterprise was transformed into a joint-stock company listed on the Warsaw stock exchange; in 1995, it employed 3878 people and sewed suits for other brands – Azzaro, Fursac, Givenchy, Hugo Boss, Kenzo. On August 31, 2006, Vistula S.A. merged with Wólczanka S.A., based in Łódź; the company was successively named Vistula&Wólczanka S.A., from 2008 Vistula Group S.A., and after the merger with Bytom in 2018 – VRG. The brand exists to this day as part of it.

II. BEFORE THE SHIRT CAME TO THE FORE

The Polish word "bielizna" (underwear) comes from the color white, and this is not a linguistic curiosity, but a description of its function. For centuries, the shirt was a technical layer: it protected expensive outerwear from sweat and dirt. It was sewn from linen, wool, hemp, cotton, and silk, changed more often than the outer layer, and appearing in public in only a shirt was considered indecent. The full-front fastening developed at the end of the 18th century, and around the 1840s, rounded bottom finishes and front inserts, or bodices, appeared. The breakthrough came with World War I, when soldiers became accustomed to wearing a shirt without a waistcoat.

From this logic – dirty layer, clean layer, visible layer – all the oddities of the old shirt arise. The "gorget," or stiffened chest insert, was there where it could be seen from under the waistcoat; the cuff and collar where they protruded from under the sleeve and chin. The rest could be cheaper and gray, because no one saw it. We have not found a quotable list of interwar Polish lingerie houses with names and addresses, so we do not provide any here – this is a gap, not an omission.

III. DETACHABLE COLLAR: AN INVENTION FROM A WASHTUB

The most famous element of 19th-century men's wardrobe was invented not in a tailor's workshop, but during laundry. In 1827, Hannah Montague of Troy, New York, cut the collar off her husband's shirt and attached it with ribbons – so that only the collar could be washed, and not the entire shirt, when only the collar was dirty. The idea was commercialized by a local entrepreneur, Reverend Ebenezer Brown, and the production of detachable collars and matching shirts became a major industry in Troy. The mechanism was simple and ruthless: a white collar was a sign of status, keeping it clean was costly, and detaching it from the shirt reduced that cost by an order of magnitude.

The collar was attached to the shirt with studs passing through holes in the collar and in the collar stand. The longer one went in the front, the shorter one in the back. Stiffness came from starch: the collar was soaked in a solution, dried, and pressed until it acquired a cardboard-like consistency. Starching was a separate craft and a separate bill – the laundry was an equal participant in this arrangement. By the end of the 19th century, celluloid collars appeared, imitating linen and not requiring starching. The whole system began to disappear from the 1920s and 1930s, when the younger generation opted for soft and permanently sewn-in collars. At that point, the problem of stiffness shifted from the laundry to the inside of the collar.

IV. ANATOMY: WHAT A SHIRT IS MADE OF

A shirt is a construction of several dozen elements, and the order of their joining is not arbitrary. In workshop practice, sewing begins with the front placket and pocket, then the yoke, then the collar set on the collar stand, and finally the sleeves with cuffs. Seam allowances vary for different parts: about 1.5 centimeters for the main elements and about 1 centimeter for the collar, because any excess there turns into thickness and waving.

  • Front and placket. The placket is a reinforced strip with buttonholes. It is the first in the sewing sequence, because its straightness determines whether the fastened shirt will twist on the chest.
  • Back and yoke. The yoke is a transverse section on the shoulders, usually double. It takes the load from the shoulders and is the place where a difference can be introduced between the left and right shoulders – something that ready-to-wear sizing cannot do.
  • Sleeve and placket. The opening at the cuff is closed with a placket – a narrow and wider strip with a pointed end. Plackets are sewn as the first operation on the sleeve, before the sleeve goes aside.
  • Cuff. Two layers of fabric plus an interlining. Single-layer variant with a button or a double cuff, closed with cufflinks – the latter requires exactly equal length of both halves, because it is folded in a visible place.
  • Collar and collar stand. Two separate components. The collar is the top, bottom, and interlining; the collar stand is the band that connects it to the neckline. The collar is attached before the sleeves, because a poorly sewn collar stand ruins the entire piece.
  • Buttons and buttonholes. In higher-quality shirts, mother-of-pearl is standard; the button under the collar is intentionally made thinner so as not to interfere with the tie knot.

V. STITCHES PER INCH: WHERE QUALITY IS MEASURED

A shirt has two seaming techniques that directly result from it being underwear: the French seam and the flat-felled seam, also known as the lingerie seam. Both have the same purpose – to hide the raw edge of the fabric inside the seam so that it doesn't fray during washing and doesn't irritate the skin. The French seam encloses the edges within a channel; the flat-felled seam wraps them and stitches them a second time, giving two parallel topstitches on the outside. It holds the sides and the sleeve insertion, and it distinguishes a shirt sewn like underwear from a shirt hastily overlocked.

The hard measure of quality, however, is numerical: stitches per inch, or SPI. An inch is 2.54 centimeters, so everything below this comes down to how densely the needle goes into the material. Thread manufacturers specify 14–20 stitches per inch for dress shirts and blouses, and 10–14 for casual wear. The reason is mechanical, not aesthetic. With a thread strength of 2.6 pounds, the seam has about 23.4 pounds at 6 stitches per inch, about 39 pounds at 10 stitches, and about 46.8 pounds at 12 – strength increases directly with density. Higher SPI also allows for the use of thinner thread, which reduces seam puckering.

How the collar stands by the neck is determined by the unseen layer: glued or sewn interlining between the top and bottom fabric.

VI. COLLAR: THE ESSENCE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

The collar is the only part of a shirt seen from a meter away, near the face, against the skin and tie knot. It is also the most technically dense component, as it consists of three separate pieces glued or sewn into one. The first layer: the top – the visible part. The second layer: the bottom – the part that touches the neck. Between them is the interlining, and it does all the work. The collar is then set on the collar stand, a narrow band that goes around the neck and connects the collar to the shirt's neckline. The collar stand determines the height at which the collar stands and whether the shirt comes up to the chin or moves away from it.

Interlinings are divided into two families. The fused interlining, or heat-sealable non-woven fabric, is ironed onto the fabric; it provides an even, smooth surface and becomes cheaper with scale, but after years of washing, it can detach in patches, causing the collar to bubble. The sewn-in, unfused interlining behaves differently: it is softer, moves with the fabric, wears out more slowly, and never detaches because it was not glued. Men's tailoring guides point to German and Swiss interlinings as reference. A historical third way was external stiffening – starch – and the trubenizing process, where a stiffening layer was permanently introduced into the collar's interior to achieve stiffness without a tub full of starch. This invention, not a change in fashion, killed the detachable collar: once stiffness resided inside, there was no longer a need to detach it.

The third mechanism is collar stays. These are smooth strips, rounded on one end and pointed on the other, inserted into pockets on the underside of the collar, right at the points. They are made from metal – brass, stainless steel, silver – from horn, mother-of-pearl, plastic, and historically from whalebone, from which the name derives. Metal versions hold better than plastic ones, which deform from heat over time. Some shirts have permanently sewn-in collar stays that cannot be removed; removable versions are taken out before cleaning, as they can imprint their shape on the top when pressed. Without a collar stay, the collar point starts to curl up after a few hours of wear – and this is the only shirt defect visible from across the room.

Collar geometry has three parameters: collar stand height, point length, and spread, which is the angle between them. In Polish construction guides, a men's shirt collar stand is usually drawn at about 2.5 centimeters high, and collar points at 5–6 centimeters. The spread determines the rest: the wider it is, the more space there is for the tie knot, and the lower the lapel line of the jacket falls against that background. Types are not decorative, but geometric solutions to the same problem.

  • Classic (Kent). Narrow spread, long points. The most formal for everyday wear; works with any jacket and any knot.
  • Semi-Italian. Medium spread. A compromise that accommodates both a simple and a wider knot.
  • Italian (cutaway). Wide spread, points angled almost horizontally. Requires a thicker knot, otherwise it exposes the collar stand and looks empty.
  • Button-down. Points buttoned to the front of the shirt. Stays in place without collar stays, but loses formality – it's a self-stiffening collar.
  • Pin collar and tab collar. Points are fastened with a transversal pin or a short tab under the knot. The knot is pushed forward and raised – a purely structural effect.
  • Wing collar (for tailcoats). Collar stand with folded-back wings, a legacy of the detachable collar. For evening wear, not for the office.

VII. FABRIC: YARN COUNT, WEAVE, FIBER

Yarn count is the number that sellers mention most often and explain least frequently. Notations like 50s, 80s, 100s, 120s, 140s, 170s describe the thickness of the yarn: the higher the number, the finer the thread and smoother the fabric. For business shirts, the 80–120 range is typically used. Complexity begins with ply: in a two-ply system, two yarns are twisted into a single thread, which is then woven – hence notations like 80/2 x 80/2, indicating a more durable two-ply yarn in both warp and weft. Thus, the number alone doesn't decide anything until it's known whether it refers to a single yarn or a ply – in practice, values above 100 usually indicate two-ply yarn.

The second parameter is the weave, which is the way the threads are interlaced. The third is the fiber. Extra-long staple cottons – Egyptian, Pima, Sea Island – are defined as those with a staple length of over 1 3/8 inches; the latter constitutes about 0.0004 percent of the world's cotton supply, which explains its price better than any description. Longer fibers allow for finer spinning and stronger twisting, which in turn completes the entire relationship: fine yarn, dense weave, smooth surface. We do not provide shirt fabric weights in grams per square meter – they are inconsistently given in available industry sources and without a common measurement method.

  • Poplin. Plain weave, the simplest possible: one thread over, one under. Smooth, cool, no sheen, and no texture – the default fabric for a dress shirt.
  • Oxford. Basket weave, where one thread passes over two. Thicker, matte, distinctly grainy; less formal and much more durable.
  • Twill. Diagonal weave, creating a diagonal ribbed texture. Denser and heavier than poplin, drapes better around the neck and wrinkles less.
  • Batiste and sheer fabrics. Fine plain weaves from very fine yarn. Light and cool, but delicate – where durability ends, breathability begins.
  • Jacquard and royal oxford. Patterned weaves where the design is created on the loom, not printed. They create a texture visible against the light and play on luster, not color.

In the Polish People's Republic, the same problem was solved with a different set. "Wólczanka" sewed from poplin, flannel, linen, silk, and wool, but also from elanocotton, non-iron knit, loop fabric, elanolin, malipol, and torlen – names that today sound like a list of chemicals, but back then meant a shirt that didn't need ironing. The offer extended beyond shirts: ties, bow ties, and cufflinks, and from the 1980s, women's blouses. From which spinning mills and weaving mills the fabrics were sourced could not be established based on citable sources.

A shirt is judged at the neck and wrist – everywhere the fabric needs to stand on its own. Whether it stands depends on the interlining, stitch density, and whether the edge is hidden in the seam or quickly overcast. None of these three things are visible in a product photo, and none are on the label. That's why for us, what matters is what remains after fifty washes: a seam that doesn't unravel, and a point that doesn't curl up.

VIII. SIZING AND WHAT REMAINS

Shirt size is the only number in a man's wardrobe that means exactly what it says: neck circumference in centimeters. Numbers from 38 to 45 are not an arbitrary scale, but a measurement; about a centimeter of slack is added to the measured circumference, and the check is two fingers fitting under the fastened collar. The second measurement is sleeve length, measured from the shoulder to the base of the thumb; the test is the cuff extending about 1–1.5 centimeters from under the jacket sleeve. The third parameter is the fit: straight regular or narrower slim. Ready-to-wear thus provides two numbers and one adjective for the entire torso.

Custom shirt tailoring in Poland has not died out – there are workshops in Warsaw and Krakow that make custom shirts – but it is a market of individual workshops, not a profession with its own training path. In Łódź, the School Complex of Fashion Industry at Naruszewicza 35 operates, but its current profile is graphic design, photography, styling, and clothing design. We have not found any confirmed program teaching shirtmaking as a separate specialization.

What remains of Wólczańska 243? The building, a brand within another capital group, and a list of operations that hasn't changed for a hundred years: front placket before the yoke, yoke before the collar, collar before the sleeve, interlining between the top and bottom, edge hidden in the seam, fourteen to twenty stitches per inch. A factory doing this nine and seven-tenths million times a year and a tailor doing it twenty times a month perform the same sequence. They differ in scale, not knowledge – and this part of the heritage cannot be sold with the company.
